As you may be aware from various media sources, Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) has emerged in some clusters throughout the United States. EV-D68 is a rare strain of a very common respiratory virus and is characterized by the following symptoms: fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, body and muscle aches, and wheezing. Children with asthma or a history of wheezing may experience more severe respiratory symptoms, and it is recommended that they maintain a supply of their prescribed medications on hand and seek medical attention if they have any type of respiratory difficulties. Our consulting school physician has also asked that we remind parents to vaccinate their children, particularly those in high risk groups, against influenza. EV-D68 is spread through close contact with infected people. The virus likely spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. You can also become infected by touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.
The New Jersey Department of Health recommends the following measures to protect yourself from EV-D68 and other enterovirus infections:
East Hanover Township School District will remain proactive in safeguarding our students, staff and families. We ask that parents take the time to review with students the methods to prevent the spread of germs both in the home and at school. We have also attached a memo from the CDC regarding EV-D68 prevention (see back of this letter). For additional information regarding the virus and its prevention, please view the following website: www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/EV68/.
